Start Before You Are Ready

There are so many big rocks and conundrums that come our way each day as administrators.  These questions and problems really have to make us think and weigh out the best options.

It can get exhausting and can weigh heavy on your heart.

I really felt this and was always second guessing and losing sleep over some of the obstacles that came in day in and day out.  Some I knew the answer to right away, but other times, I really had no idea and it felt like it was all on me to make the right decision or do the right thing.

I felt alone…

It wasn’t until I found the power of a leadership community of mentors, that everything changed.  Each month, we got a group of principals together on Zoom and came with a question, success, or idea and we masterminded it together.

This was the best gift I could have given myself, the teachers, the students, and our school as a whole.

I no longer felt alone and I had people who were right alongside me in similar positions dealing with similar things to help me whenever I needed it.  I became more confident, less stressed, and I even felt more fulfillment because I knew I wasn’t alone. The best part about finding your community was that I learned the most in those sessions with my fellow colleagues who were elbow to elbow with me, immediately implementing what we learned in the meeting, over any professional development session that I had attended. It was because the problems were real and happening as we learned about them, and we developed real action steps and implemented them before we felt ready. I am a hockey player so I like to say that we learned in game time motion right inside of the game rather than after the fact, in a dressing room, on a whiteboard. Learning in game time motion changed everything. We learned that we didn’t need all of our ducks to be in a row or have everything perfect before we could start to take action.

The process became a system where we masterminded some action steps, went back and implemented outside of our offices and in the game, and then came back to reflect. We became transparent about the process with our teachers and realized that the messy part of figuring it out together and wondering out loud, was exactly the thing that built trust and influence. Teachers began to see us being vulnerable and going right into the classroom with the teachers rather than solving it in our office and telling them what to do. We showed them and we were vulnerable and that it was ok to not have it all figured out. Most of all, we showed them we had some skin in the game as well.

Once I realized the power of community and mentors, I wanted to give that gift to other leaders around the world. I developed a course, called School Administrator’s Academy that walks alongside you step by step and teaches you how to lead a super school of teachers, leaders, and students that start before they are ready, take action and reflect, set up a collaborative environment with vision, work elbow to elbow with each other, and set boundaries to ensure they have balance. But the very best part of this course, is that you get a community of leadership besties for life because we walk the walk alongside you and in game time motion.

That’s what School Administrator’s Academy is, a community who are there for each other figuring it out together.

It is not just a course where you take it and forget about it.

It is one that asks you to implement as you learn and before you are ready.

It is a course that moves along with a community of members tailoring it to each need.

It is a course that has a coach and members who are walking the walk alongside you.
