Embracing AI in Education: How Principals Can Reclaim Their Time and Thrive

Picture this: It’s a typical Monday morning. You’re a principal or a teacher, juggling a million tasks – managing behaviors, meeting parent demands, adopting new practices. Your to-do list is a never-ending scroll, and the clock is your arch-nemesis. Sounds familiar, right? But what if I told you there’s a way to turn this chaos into calm? Enter Artificial Intelligence – not the scary, sci-fi movie kind, but a friendly, time-saving assistant. What if I told you, we don’t have to be so tired, so overwhelmed, so empty anymore? What if there was hope?

Imagine having a personal, free assistant that understands your thoughts and tailors solutions to your specific needs. I promise, it is not a pipe dream anymore. AI can help you regain control of your time. I used to be so scared of it. But I was wrong to be scared of it. Now, I know just what I was missing and how much life, energy, passion, purpose, time, and renewal I can get back. I know some of you won’t agree with me and that’s ok. But some of you might be intrigued…Think about it – less time spent on writing reports, more time for meaningful interactions. What if AI could help you draft those tricky report card comments or teacher evaluations and it still be personalized and specific to the assessement and person? Or provide a script for those tough conversations with parents or staff? Suddenly, you’re not drowning in paperwork; you’re surfing on top of it and spending time where it really matters, with the people. Not only do you have your time back but now you are gaining trust because you are visible and in the mix of it all with boots on the ground. That is where the magic really happens.

Yeah, But…

I know what you are thinking…”It’s a computer doing my work!” “What about the personal touch?” “Isn’t AI just a fancy way to make us lazy?” I get it. The apprehensions are real. But here’s the truth – AI is here, and it’s being used in ways we can’t even imagine. Why should everyone else benefit while we’re stuck in the old ways? I have learned ways to make it your thoughts, tailored to exactly what you want to say, manicured to fit and describe characters and styles of all different humans that bless us in our careers. I have learned ways to prompt it so that it is all of my thoughts, all of my observations, assessments, and noticings and the only thing AI does is make it prettier. It used to take me hours to make things sound better and honestly, I hated that part of my job. I loved being with the people but despised writing about it the classroom observations. Now I am more visible, input my notes into AI and it generates full, beautiful reports that are my words. It has rejuvenated me and the community I lead because we have time, energy, more creativity, hope, and efficiency. But I had to learn how to prompt so that it was my thoughts and not the computer thoughts. This can be tricky…

Redesigning Your Educational Life

This is about more than just embracing technology; it’s about redesigning your professional life. Your growth is critical, not just for you, but for your colleagues, community you lead, teachers and students. Staying stuck in the past, clinging to nostalgia, won’t cut it. Remember how our parents complained about TV and radio? Now we’re the ones fretting over smartphones. It’s time to embrace AI.

The Future is Now

Yes, AI will change jobs, but it will also create opportunities and, most importantly, give you your life back. We need to shift our mindset and see AI as a tool for building a better future. As Brendan Burchard wisely points out, those who don’t plan for the future end up in a ghost town. We do not want to be a ghost town because we didn’t plan for the future. We’re not just products of our environment; we’re creators of it.
