My Transformation from Overwhelm to Inspiration
For too long, I wore my exhaustion like a badge of honor. As a seasoned school administrator, I was no stranger to the crushing weight of endless responsibilities. Day in and day out, I battled the burnout that seemed to be a non-negotiable part of my job. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be this way?
My journey from the depths of fatigue to rediscovering my passion for education was not instantaneous. It was a transformative process ignited by a pivotal realization: connection, community, and expert guidance are powerful antidotes to burnout.
The Power of Community and Connection
I took the first step by surrounding myself with a vibrant community of educators and experts who shared my struggles and aspirations. This wasn’t just about finding people who could offer sympathy—it was about building relationships with those who brought practical solutions and support to the table. Together, we explored new approaches to leadership and learning that were both sustainable and fulfilling. It was a community of like-minded people that I met with each month. This was a non-negotiable meeting that I never missed. In fact, I even met with them more often if needed. It lit me up and ignited a flicker of fire that used to be there. It grew and grew, the more I met with this community.
Reimagining Meetings: From Monotony to Mastermind
The changes began with how we conducted meetings. Instead of dreading these as tedious necessities filled with slides and checklists, I transformed them into dynamic community gatherings and mastermind sessions. We shifted our focus from merely disseminating information to engaging deeply with each other’s ideas and experiences. I invited all voices in through a system of question, conversation, and sharing of ideas to the whole group. It was that simple, but I really had to let go of the slides (not easy….because they became a crutch for me). But once I did, the room became a vibrant working session of people who felt like they were a part of it and not just told what to do.
Heart-Centered Leadership: Inviting All Voices
In every interaction, I strived to be heart-centered rather than task-oriented. I learned this from Jon Berghoff who is the founder of Xchange approach – an approach to using fundamentals of facilitating transformational events that unlock human potential . I heard him speak in an online training workshop as a part of a TME Membership training group and he spoke straight to my heart. I immediately began leading meetings this way. I encouraged open dialogues and made it a priority to invite all voices into the conversation. This inclusive approach helped us move away from a top-down model of communication, fostering a culture where everyone could contribute meaningfully. It was a system that I followed diligently. I always started with powerful questioning, moving into conversation in small groups, and then sharing out.
Learning by Doing: Modeling the Way
One of the most impactful changes was how I led by example. I didn’t just talk about new methods; I modeled them wondering out loud as I took them through the experience. This hands-on approach allowed our teachers to experience new techniques in real-time, facilitating deeper understanding and more effective implementation in their own classrooms. This one was a game changer. In fact, they now lead their own students through modelling the experience.
Co-Creation: Building Together
Our meetings evolved into collaborative sessions where we co-created strategies and solutions. This wasn’t just about improving our professional practices; it was about enriching our collective experience, making every session a shared journey of discovery and growth. We co-constructed criteria for any problem or outcome that required a deeper level of thinking. We did this through conversation, questioning, modelling and immersion into work samples.
The Results: A Renewed Sense of Purpose
The transformation was profound. We weren’t just going through the motions; we were building something meaningful together. My passion for education was reignited, and I watched as it sparked enthusiasm and commitment across our entire community. These actions all grew from questioning, conversation, community, and connection…not through slides and to do lists. You might be thinking….how did you get anything done? In fact, we got more done because we used the same actions over and over again to figure things out. We had more people at the table. I had less slides to prepare which gave me more time. We had more fun and real human connections. We weren’t alone anymore.
